Description

The Administration building was programmed as the first phase of administrative services and a future phase will be constructed to the west (Site Plan). The first phase house offices of registration, counseling, financial aids, college administration and other student services functions. The college will grow and the building design is structured to allow for program growth and program flexibility. The location of the administration building was firstly sited to make it accessible and identifiable to students both new and continuing, as this is a student's first college contact. The second determination was to make a first impression that this is an institution of higher learning and inviting to new and continuing students as well as visitors. The positions of functions must first relate to student ease to access various functions from the one stop service counter at the entry with a interactive video kiosk (Floor Plan), to a direct access to counseling and other student services. The building was designed to provide an open airy feeling with generous use of glass but yet protected by solar sensitive overhangs and canopies from local climate conditions with hot summers (Picture 3) (Picture 4). The identification of the entry was done with a rotunda with glass around allowing students to see inside as well as bring the outside inside. The use of exterior raised planters seating have been placed throughout the facility (Picture 5). The use of low maintenance materials such as cast stone, porcelain tile, masonry and EIFS have been combined to create clean crisp lines with soft textures and colors (Picture 6). Detailing of these materials at intersections allows opportunities for soft accents and transitions (Detail). The feeling in the interior was to create an inviting student friendly environment. The steel structure was exposed with the space frame trusses with translucent panels between frames allowing a soft cast of light throughout the rotunda (Roof) (Detail) (General View). The dramatic use of soffits and light accents was used to create identification of spaces and functions. The one-stop entry counter was sculpted from Corian in gentle-friendly curves accenting the terrazzo flooring.
